| In the end of summer 1938 Yulian Popel was arrested by agents of PCIA in Yuravichi. We heard that Popel is accused of complicity in the crimes made by Balahovich’s gang in 1920. | On one winter night in 1920 Yurevichi was attacked by the gang and killed few Jews. We were afraid to start negotiations with them so we asked Popel to help us. He is one of the best friends of us and whom we know since his arrival to Yurevichi in 1916. So we asked him to go to the gangsters to learn how they could pay us the death of our innocent people. Being an honest and kind person Popel could not refuse us and took a risk. The band asked us to pay an indemnity or they would be on the shoot. We accepted their terms just to prevent bloodshed. Popel neither paid the indemnity nor gave up our things to the gang. In an effort to set the record straight we state that Popel did not take part in the crime but he did his best to save us from death and robbery not turning it to account. He is an upright citizen. Many Jewish families hid in the Popel’s shed attic at that time so many Jewish lives were saved.
