-Jews are first mentioned in the late 19th century.  Their population was 65 in 1811 and 1,287 (out of a total of 1,577) in 1897. A Musar yeshiva was active in the town until the Soviet authorities closed it down in 1922.  In the same year, a Jewish elementary school was opened.  In 1926, the Jewish population was 1,139 and in the early 1930s, 60% of the Jews were artisans. Two Jewish kolkhozes near the town supported 50 Jewish families in 1930.  +==== Location ====
